Requirements to Register to Vote

• a U.S. Citizen
• a resident of Florida
• 18 years of age (you may pre-register if you are 16, but must be 18 to vote)

    *You must be registered for at least 29 days before you can vote in an election.

Anyone convicted of a felony or declared mentally incompetent with respect to voting, may not register to vote until their civil rights or competency have been restored.

Your Political Party

You may choose to register in a political party or to register with no party affiliation. Registration in a political party enables you to vote in that party's primary only, and in nonpartisan and general elections.

However, Article VI, Section 5 (b) Florida Consititution, provides that if all candidates have the same party affiliation and the winner will have no opposition in the general election, all qualified electors, regardless of party affiliation, may vote in the primary elections for that office.

School board members run by district and are now nonpartisan, meaning that all registered voters in the district are entitled to vote in this race regardless of party.

Deadline - Voter Registration

The deadline for voter registration or change of party affiliation in Florida is 29 days prior to each election. If you mail your registration application, the date your application is postmarked will be your registration date. If your application is complete and you are a qualified voter, a voter information card will be mailed to you. Your voter information card will indicate your precinct assignment and the name of your polling place.

Changes In Your Registration

It is the responsibility of the voter to keep his or her address current with the Elections Office. Be sure you notify the Elections Office if you have a name change, a mailing or residence address change or if your choice of party affiliation changes. A new voter information card will then be mailed to you. If you move to another state, you must re-register there. If you move within the state of Florida, you must update your address with a voter registration application.
